A small French town in the 1970s. Six-year-old Jean is about to start school. When the teacher asks the students about their parents’ jobs, Jean realizes he is different from the others. Nervous, he makes up an answer: “My mother is a secretary.” In truth, Jean’s mother is constantly traveling. She keeps sending postcards to Michèle, a little neighbor girl who already knows how to read, so that she can read the travel stories to Jean. Yet the truth is something else entirely.
