The series follows the fortunes of Dexter, a young prince without a crown, whose King-Father is dead. Soon after, the evil wizard Renvick stole the crown and proclaimed himself king. Fearing Dexter would get in his way, he ordered his servants to imprison the prince. However, Dexter fled into the woods, where he found rescue in the good magician Phineas, who lived with a young dragon named Lulu. While preparing a potion, Dexter unwittingly caused an explosion, bringing to life three monsters endowed with magical powers—Winkle, Gump, and Boo.
