The story begins with the fateful encounter between Kimihiro Watanuki and Yūko Ichihara. Since meeting Yūko, Kimihiro has encountered all sorts of people and things, experienced many good and bad events, and undergone significant changes himself. However, after leaving her final wish, the shop owner Yūko vanished. Thus, Kimihiro remains in the shop, waiting for the day he will reunite with her. Over the past ten years, Kimihiro has guarded the shop every day, maturing from the high school student he once was. On this day, Shizuka Dōmeki, now a university assistant professor, visits the shop and tells Kimihiro about a strange incident. As an expert in folklore, he has been entrusted by a prominent family to appraise ancient artifacts left behind by their ancestors. He discovers the Dakiniten manuscript and also realizes that this family is quite unusual. Kimihiro accepts the request through a video recording and sends a pipe fox to accompany Dōmeki to the family’s residence to complete the task…
