"Chinese Series" is a silent experimental short film directed by American filmmaker Stan Brakhage. Released in the United States in May 2003, it premiered on September 7 of the same year, with a runtime of 2 minutes and 18 seconds, shot on 35mm film. This film was Brakhage's final work before his death, filmed in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, and is included as the sixth segment on the third disc of the anthology "By Brakhage: An Anthology, Volume Two." The film abandons traditional narrative structure entirely. Brakhage employed a technique of wetting the filmstrip with saliva and then scratching abstract patterns into the emulsion layer with his fingernails, directly intervening in the physical material of the film through bodily action. This radical non-photographic method breaks through the framework of traditional cinematic grammar and is regarded as a pioneering practice of direct materialist creation.
