Adapted from the original work by Ruan Zhangjing. In the past, there lived a diligent young man by the sea who went fishing every day. One day, from morning till night, he caught not a single fish, only a golden conch. The youth brought the conch home and gently placed it in a water jar. It turned out that this conch was transformed by the Blue Sea Fairy, Conch Girl. From Coral Island, she had watched the young man rowing, fishing, and singing every day, and her heart grew envious. Thus, she intentionally allowed the young man to catch her and bring her to the human world, where she transformed into a beautiful girl. Day after day, she helped the youth cook meals and mend clothes, and the two became close friends, working and singing together. Three years passed, and Conch’s mother—the Sea Goddess—finally discovered her daughter’s whereabouts. She refused to believe that her daughter could be happier living with a poor fisherman in the human world than on Coral Island. Therefore, she demanded that Conch return to the fairy island before dawn, or else she would flood the human world. Upon learning this news, the young man, disregarding his own life, braved fierce winds and towering waves to venture three times to the fairy island and reason with the Sea Goddess. No matter how the Sea Goddess threatened or tempted him, he remained unwavering. Moved at last by the youth’s loyalty and courage, the Sea Goddess agreed to let her daughter live with the young man forever.
