In June 2006 at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in France, this film was ranked first in the "Century of Animation · 100 Works" list. It is also the world's first character animation. Produced in 1914, the film appears quite naive by today's standards. However, a female dinosaur named Gertie performs various actions as indicated by the intertitles (with guidance from the relevant staff), sometimes willingly and sometimes not. Yet, at the time, the film astonished American audiences. Animation was still a novelty back then, and the concept of combining live-action with animation was ahead of its time. When discussing the pioneers of animation, the film's director, Winsor McCay, undoubtedly stands as one of them.
