Zhong Kui the Ghost Catcher is a deity in Chinese folklore known for exorcising evil spirits. According to legend, he was a native of Zhongnan Mountain during the early Tang Dynasty, with a leopard-like head, round eyes, an iron face, and a curly beard—an exceptionally ugly appearance. Yet, he was highly talented, well-versed in literature, upright in character, fearless of evil forces, and skilled in capturing ghosts and demons. The author employs the unique decorative style of Chinese painting in an attempt to convey this story to the audience through a distinctly national visual experience.
