In the three-hundred-year-old sleepy town of Blithe Hollow lives a young boy named Norman (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee) who can see ghosts. However, this ability brings him endless trouble—everyone around him, even his parents and sister, thinks he is a delusional liar. Only Neil (voiced by Tucker Albrizzi), a chubby boy at school who is also mocked by others, believes him and is willing to be his friend. One day, Norman is approached by his reclusive and eccentric Uncle Penderghast (voiced by John Goodman). Uncle Penderghast is also a medium and reveals a grave secret to Norman: the ghost of a witch, killed by the townspeople when the town was founded, is about to awaken. When she does, she will unleash a horde of terrifying zombies to curse the town. 　　 Before long, Uncle Penderghast passes away, and the dreaded day of the witch’s awakening draws near. Norman must find a way to save his town…
