"The Hunchback of Notre Dame" was produced by Walt Disney as the 36th Walt Disney animated classic, inspired by Victor Hugo's novel "Notre-Dame de Paris." While retaining the basic framework of the original story, it adapts most of the subject matter. The plot focuses on a love triangle involving the Gypsy dancer Esmeralda, Claude Frollo, and Quasimodo. Quasimodo, who rings the bells in the bell tower of Notre-Dame Cathedral, is physically deformed but kind-hearted. The film was directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise, the directors of "Beauty and the Beast." It grossed approximately $325 million worldwide, becoming one of the highest-grossing animated films of all time. In 1997, it was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Score.
