American experimental filmmaker Bill Morrison's 2004 new work "Light Is Calling" draws from a segment of James Young's early Gothic silent film "The Bells" (1926), depicting the first encounter between the male and female protagonists. However, the narrative plot becomes highly ambiguous and abstract in this short film. More importantly, Morrison employs techniques such as burning and dissolving the film stock and other physical media to create an intensely stream-of-consciousness, visually dazzling spectacle. The background music is once again provided by Morrison's longtime collaborator, American experimental musician Michael Gordon. Source material from the complete collection of Bill Morrison's experimental works. A scene from The Bells (1926) is optically reprinted and edited to Michael Gordon’s 7-minute composition. A meditation on the fleeting nature of life and love, as seen through the roiling emulsion of a film.
