This experiment served as a "prestige advertisement" for Shell Motor Oil. As traditional animation became increasingly dominated by Walt Disney, many European filmmakers turned to puppetry as an alternative. Lye enlisted the help of avant-garde friends such as Humphrey Jennings and John Banting to create the amusing puppets. Exploring the still-complex color process, which involved combining three separate images, Lye crafted such a vivid storm scene that critics hailed it as "proof that color film has entered a new stage."
