One day during their journey to the West to retrieve the scriptures, Tang Sanzang and his disciples were led by a beam of light into the Nine Heavens while crossing a desert. The Buddha handed Tang Sanzang a password-protected case containing priceless treasures and a pair of iron shoes, instructing him that the iron shoes must be worn through before the case could be opened. After bidding farewell to the Buddha, the master and disciples boarded a "sightseeing elevator." The restless Sun Wukong fiddled with the elevator controls, causing it to malfunction. The four of them plummeted back to the desert, only to find themselves in the modern world—over 1,500 years later. A lone female explorer and journalist accidentally discovered their traces and immediately began tracking and reporting on the journey of Tang Sanzang and his disciples as they sought the scriptures in modern society. Modern humans were filled with curiosity about them, while Tang Sanzang’s password case attracted the covetous attention of all sorts of modern-day ghosts and monsters, leading to a series of tense, thrilling, and delightfully unpredictable adventures. Also sharing the same title is an animated film produced by Shanghai Animation Film Studio in 1995.
