"Postman Pat" is a British stop-motion animated children's television series, first produced by Woodland Animations. The series follows the adventures of Pat Clifton, a postman for the Royal Mail service, working in the fictional village of Greendale (inspired by the Longsleddale valley near Kendal in Cumbria). The first season of 13 episodes of "Postman Pat" aired on BBC One in 1981. The original concept and scripts were written by John Cunliffe, with animation direction by Ivor Wood, who also worked on classics such as "The Magic Roundabout," "The Wombles," "Paddington," and "The Herbs." Following the success of the first season, four television specials and a second season of 13 episodes were produced in the 1990s. In this season, Pat's family made their on-screen debut for the first time (although his wife had been mentioned in several episodes). From 2003 to 2008, Cosgrove Hall Films produced a new version of the series, expanding on many elements of the original. The show concluded on March 29, 2017, after eight seasons, twelve specials, and five broadcasts. The spin-off series "Special Delivery Service" continues to be rerun on weekends on CBeebies, while the 2000s Cosgrove Hall series was also rerun from September 2023 to May 2024 on ITVBe's children's programming block, littleBe. The original two seasons produced by Ivor Wood are available to watch on BritBox, Prime Video, and DVD.
