Adapted from Dostoevsky's novella of the same name, this work was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 1989 Cannes International Film Festival. In a dimly lit room, only the ticking of a clock could be heard, monotonous and oppressive. A man sat alone by the bedside, watching over his wife who had stopped breathing. His thoughts drifted back to the past: the man was once the owner of a pawnshop, and a beautiful, gentle woman named Lukerya was his customer. As their interactions deepened, the man fell in love with Lukerya, and the two eventually came together. However, they were fundamentally different in character, and this gap became an insurmountable chasm in their emotional lives. The silent, oppressive existence made them feel their love aging, and the once gentle Lukerya grew increasingly irritable. Their shattered love could no longer be mended...
