An elderly woman living alone longed for a daughter. Day and night, she prayed until her sincerity moved a witch. The witch gave the old woman a seed, instructing her to water it daily. Gradually, the seed sprouted, blossomed, and tiny Thumbelina (voiced by Jodi Benson) was born within the delicate flower’s stamen. 　　Although the old woman took meticulous care of Thumbelina every day, Thumbelina still felt somewhat lonely, yearning to meet a companion her own size. One day, Prince Cornelius of the Miniature Kingdom (voiced by Gary Imhoff) appeared before her. The two fell in love at first sight. The prince promised to return for her the next morning, but their conversation was overheard by Mrs. Toad, who wanted Thumbelina to marry her son. So, while Thumbelina slept, Mrs. Toad kidnapped her.
