In early November 1927, on the eve of the Huangma Uprising, five young self-defense corps fighters were temporarily formed into a reconnaissance squad. They infiltrated the county town in advance from Qiliping in Huang'an, the uprising's birthplace, to assist the uprising's assault team in successfully capturing the county town. They repeatedly distinguished themselves in the subsequent battles to defend the county. However, due to the overwhelming disparity in strength between the enemy and their own forces, the uprising army was forced to abandon Huang'an City after holding out for half a month. The squad retreated with the main force to the Mulan Mountain area in Huangpi County to carry out guerrilla activities. In January 1928, the uprising army was reorganized into the Seventh Army of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Revolutionary Army at Mulan Mountain. Employing flexible and mobile guerrilla tactics, they achieved a series of victories and were formally reorganized into the 31st Division of the 11th Army of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army in July. By May 1929, the Red 31st Division had initially established the Hubei-Henan Border Soviet Area, centered on Chaishanbao and spanning over a hundred kilometers. Tempered by the brutal fires of war, the young members of the squad had grown into steadfast and seasoned revolutionary fighters. Carrying the lofty ideal of achieving communism, they marched toward broader new battlefields.
