Winter. In the forest live the Fox and the Hare. The former lives in an "ice hut," the latter in a "wooden hut." The Fox's hut is more beautiful, but—alas!—come spring, it melts, and the Fox decides to seize the Hare's dwelling. Using her advantage in physical strength, she achieves this without much difficulty, and the homeless Hare sets off "wherever his eyes lead him." On his path, he meets the Wolf, who, unexpectedly moved by the Hare's plight, decides to help him drive out the invader, but the Fox, using verbal threats, drives him away too. Then the story repeats when the Hare meets the Bear. Next, the Bull tries to help him. And again, unsuccessfully. Afterward, the Hare meets the Rooster, who also sets off to drive out the Fox-invader. Using his saber and courage, he drives out the Fox and stays to live together with the Hare.
