"同胞速醒" (Tongbao Suxing) was written by Zhu Shilin and directed and animated by the Wan brothers. Completed in the winter of 1931 at Shanghai Lianhua Film Company, it is a film promoting the theme of anti-Japanese resistance. It begins with a long scroll painting depicting the magnificent landscapes of the motherland. At the end of this scroll, on a grassland, sleeps a giant lion, blocking the advance of the Japanese invading army. The sleeping lion is violently bombarded and awakened by the Japanese invaders' cannons, airplanes, and tanks. With a mighty roar, it stands up, its limbs and tail transforming into figures representing workers, peasants, merchants, students, and soldiers, while its body turns into a massive stone roller. Workers, peasants, merchants, students, and soldiers unite their efforts to push and pull the stone roller, crushing the Japanese invaders along with their airplanes, cannons, and tanks into pieces. During the pushing and pulling, white-text slogans continuously burst onto the screen, growing from small to large. These slogans include: "Those with money contribute money, donate enthusiastically"; "Those with strength contribute strength, join the rescue teams"; "Workers, peasants, merchants, students, and soldiers, enthusiastically join the volunteer army"; "Save the nation from extinction, boycott Japanese goods"; "Resist to the end,坚决不做亡国奴 (resolutely refuse to be slaves of a lost nation)," and others.
