The anime "Haha Jing Hua Yuan" is adapted from the Chinese classical vernacular masterpiece "Jing Hua Yuan," which has been translated into English, French, German, Japanese, and many other languages. Soviet scholar Feishman praised it as "a monumental work that blends fantasy, historical fiction, satire, and travelogue." The original author used fantastical tales from foreign lands as a guise to reflect on worldly affairs, venting his disdain for social injustices and expressing his yearning for an ideal society. This animated adaptation draws from "Jing Hua Yuan" and employs the rich language of animation to tell the story of Tang Cai, a talented scholar from the Tang Dynasty who, after being dismissed from his post and returning home in frustration, renounces his pursuit of fame and sets sail with his brother-in-law. They travel to dozens of countries, witnessing a myriad of bizarre and fascinating customs and cultures. These include the heartless and unfeeling "Land of No Intestines," the ungrateful and money-obsessed "Land of Winged People," the cunning and opportunistic "Land of Deep Eyes," the gullible and easily astonished "Land of Big Ears," and the "Land of Women," where men wear long skirts and handle domestic affairs while women wear boots and hats to manage external matters. One of the protagonists, Lin Zhiyang, is even selected as a concubine in the Land of Women's palace, where he endures great suffering. The series is distinguished by its unique, vivid, humorous, lighthearted, and surreal style, hence the adapted title "Haha Jing Hua Yuan."
