The protagonist Gardner is a middle school music teacher whose life is easily seen through, but his true dream is to play the piano—not just teaching kids how to play as he does now, but making a living through music, through jazz. When he finally lands his first job as a musician, he accidentally falls into a sewer and "dies," waking up in a black hole as a lonely soul. 　　Soon, he discovers he is not alone—he arrives at the YOU Seminar, where another soul nicknamed 22 has been attending for hundreds of years. 22 harbors an intense hatred for humans and has never gone to possess a body. Quickly, Gardner and 22 return to the real world, where Gardner will learn the true meaning of "having a soul."
