"Persepolis" is a 2007 animated film adapted from the graphic novel of the same name created by Marjane Satrapi. Shamaki is a whimsical 9-year-old girl who loves Western culture and idolizes Bruce Lee. God is her close friend, and she spends her days lost in fantasies, dreaming of becoming the last prophet in the universe. Her parents and grandmother sometimes find her a handful, while those around her see her as an odd child. Conservative Iranian women view her as a symbol of Western corruption. Her love for all things Western is not accepted by her conservative homeland, forcing her to secretly buy vinyl records and other cherished items. She thought life could continue this way, filled with imagination, until a series of conservative revolutions and wars began to spread, compelling her parents to send her to Europe. Throughout her growing years, she faces constant hardships. After being deeply wounded by love, she starts to miss her homeland, her parents, her grandmother, and the scent of jasmine on her. She chooses to return home, where everyone seeks happiness to make up for lost time. But when the true meaning of freedom appears before her, she must once again leave her homeland to pursue her dreams...
