The rabbit mocks the turtle, saying, "There is no creature in the world slower than you." The turtle then challenges the rabbit to a race to the top of the mountain. The rabbit dashes off in one go and, seeing the turtle slowly walking along, grows careless, thinking, "It'll probably take him until evening anyway," and takes a nap. Paying no mind to the sleeping rabbit, the turtle steadily reaches the mountain summit. A crow caws, "Fool!" and the rabbit, waking up, panics, thinking, "I overslept, I've messed up," and starts running, but it's too late. The turtle triumphantly says, "You're so slow, Mr. Rabbit. What happened to all that boasting from before?"
