"Piper" is a 6-minute short film that served as the pre-feature presentation for Pixar's 2016 animated film "Finding Dory." It tells the story of a hungry young sandpiper who must overcome its fear of water to forage for food on a wave-ravaged beach. This short was directed by Alan Barillaro, a new-generation animator at Pixar, and took approximately three years from creative development to completion. Alan Barillaro shared that the inspiration for the film came to him while he was running on the beach near the Pixar studio in Emeryville. He observed many birds hunting for food by the sea but avoiding the waves. This observation sparked an idea, leading to the creation of a short film told from a bird's perspective.
