Psychonauts is an animated feature directed by Alberto Vazquez and Pedro Rivero, based on the original graphic novel of the same title by Alberto Vazquez. As a feature film, it represents the culmination of a journey that began with the short film 'Birdboy', which was also adapted from this graphic novel and won a Goya Award in 2012. 'Birdboy' was also shortlisted for an Oscar in its category and garnered numerous awards at national and international festivals. Aimed at both young and adult audiences, Psychonauts is an unconventional work that utilizes the typical iconography of cartoon series to tell an intense, poetic, and socially conscious story. It follows the struggle of its main characters, DINKY and BIRDBOY, as they attempt to escape the suffocating atmosphere of the island they inhabit—a place that lost all its former splendor due to a terrible industrial accident. The lack of job prospects, familial and social control over those perceived as different, the reliance on addictive substances, and a pitiful environment form the backdrop against which the characters navigate their lives. Yet, amidst this, friendship, love, and the hope for a better future elsewhere persist. The protagonists become true travelers of the mind (Psychonauts), isolating themselves in past sensations or emotions to avoid confronting reality. Psychonauts is a powerful tale of contrasts, blending a friendly, minimalist aesthetic with an adult narrative carrying significant social critique of the world we live in.
