This art film is a puppet animation, and "The Long-Haired Girl" is another classic animated short adapted from a legend of the Dong ethnic minority in China, selected from "Selected Folk Tales of the Dong People." A Dong girl named Long-Haired Girl lives at the foot of the barren and steep Gaoshan Mountain. Once, after finally managing to fetch a little water for her sick mother, she passes by an old banyan tree on her way home. Seeing its leaves withered and yellow, she pours some water at its roots, and the old banyan tree instantly turns lush green. Later, Long-Haired Girl discovers a spring on the cliff face of Gaoshan Mountain. Overjoyed and surprised, she is suddenly swept by a dark wind into a gloomy and terrifying cave, where a mountain demon threatens her, forbidding her to tell anyone about the spring, or else he will kill everyone in her village. Returning home, agony torments Long-Haired Girl until her hair turns yellow, then from yellow to white. To save her fellow villagers from dying of thirst, she finally resolves to tell everyone about the spring. But just as people rejoice over obtaining the water, a dark wind sweeps Long-Haired Girl back into the cave. The mountain demon orders her to lie beneath the spring's outlet, to be washed by the water for thousands upon thousands of years, or else he will make sure no one in the village survives. Long-Haired Girl decides to sacrifice herself. When she goes to bid farewell to the old banyan tree, it transforms into an old man. The old man makes Long-Haired Girl's hair grow on a stone figure that looks exactly like her, and he commands the stone figure to take her place beneath the spring's outlet. At that moment, the mountain demon appears. The old man gives Long-Haired Girl a bow and arrows, with which she shoots the mountain demon dead. From then on, Long-Haired Girl's long hair turns into a waterfall, the barren Gaoshan Mountain becomes a garden of flowers and fruits, and Long-Haired Girl grows back a head of jet-black long hair.
