This animated short film uses fluid and delicate brushstrokes to outline a wondrous space that freely transitions between two-dimensional planes and three-dimensional forms. A black-and-white figure moves through hand-drawn flat squares, yet remains perpetually dissatisfied with each attempt. No sooner does he sketch a portion than he is blocked by the very square he has drawn. It is only when he inadvertently draws a three-dimensional cube that a breakthrough seems possible—yet he remains trapped within the constraints of the two-dimensional plane. The black-and-white figure repeatedly struggles with the cube, but ultimately returns to the starting point. Directed by the French visionary Léonard Cohen, this short film won the Best Graduation Film award at the 2011 Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Léonard Cohen is a graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in France, a background clearly reflected in the film’s distinctive visual style.
