An old woman named Gothel witnesses a drop of pure sunlight fall to the ground, giving birth to a magical flower that can keep her young and ageless when she sings to it. Years later, the queen of a neighboring kingdom, weakened by pregnancy, faces the risk of a difficult childbirth. The king orders a search for the legendary mystical flower, and after the guards find it, they brew it to cure the queen, who then gives birth to a blonde-haired baby girl named Rapunzel. Gothel learns that Rapunzel’s golden hair possesses the flower’s healing power, but if cut, the magic fades and it turns brown. So she takes the infant, secluding herself and the child in a remote tower, raising Rapunzel as her own daughter. However, every year on Rapunzel’s birthday, the kingdom releases thousands of sky lanterns into the air, hoping they will one day guide the lost princess home.
