The mouse Despereaux (voiced by Matthew Broderick) has been frail and sickly since childhood, yet he possesses two exceptionally large ears. Spending his early years in the library, he gradually learned to recognize words and read. He loves the tales of heroes rescuing damsels in distress from fairy stories and often fantasizes about becoming a valiant knight himself, coming to the aid of beauties in peril. During an outing, Despereaux meets Princess Pea (voiced by Emma Watson). Eager to become a hero, Despereaux is exiled by his father Lester (voiced by William H. Macy) for violating the strict laws of the mouse kingdom. In the vast lands beyond the Kingdom of Dor, Despereaux encounters Roscuro (voiced by Dustin Hoffman), another mouse who has been banished from his own homeland. 　　 Not long after, the exiled Despereaux learns that Princess Pea has been imprisoned in a dungeon. Filled with affection for the princess, Despereaux decides to risk everything to rescue her. Will he triumph over evil and win the love and dignity he deserves? 　　 This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by the renowned American children's author Kate DiCamillo.
