Adapted from the novel by British author J.R. Ackerley, it depicts the bittersweet life of the author in his later years with his newly adopted sheepdog. The dog is sometimes neurotic, sometimes revealing its canine nature, and the relationship between man and dog is somewhat like that of lovers, and somewhat like that of father and daughter, detailed and heartwarming. Roger Ebert once again awarded this film a perfect score.
