The entire book contains 130,000 words. It was first published by Hubei Children's Publishing House in December 1991. After its release, it won four awards: the Second "National Outstanding Children's Literature Award" by the Chinese Writers Association, the First Prize of the Second "National Children's Book Award," the "China National Book Award Nomination," and the top prize of the "Soong Ching Ling Children's Literature Award." In October 1998, it was republished by Chunfeng Literature and Art Publishing House, with an initial print run of 50,400 copies. The protagonist of "Strange Old Man," referred to as "I," is named Zhao Xinxin, a somewhat lonely boy. At school, he is often criticized by teachers and mocked by classmates for his wild imagination. At home, he is frequently beaten for refusing the "special treatment" meals his mother prepares and due to his father's harshness. One day, he offers his seat on a tram to a thin, short old man. Unexpectedly, his life becomes much livelier from then on. The old man calls himself "Strange Old Man" and, like Xinxin, loves to play and fears taking medicine and injections. More importantly, the little old man seems to possess some magical abilities. He puts birds inside Xinxin's stomach to "eliminate pests," creates a double of Xinxin to do his homework, and even turns Xinxin into a mouse to explore the mouse kingdom together. There are 12 stories in total, ranging from short to long. Why not join Xinxin and experience them for yourselves?
