Long, long ago, there were two old men. The honest and hardworking Tarobei had a lump on his left cheek, while the greedy and lazy Jirobei had a lump on his right cheek. One day, when Tarobei went to the mountains to gather firewood, he was caught in a sudden, heavy evening downpour. He took shelter in the hollow of a large tree and eventually fell asleep. When he awoke, he heard the sound of flutes and drums in the moonlight. As Tarobei cheerfully approached, he found a banquet of tengu in full swing. Scolded by the great tengu, Tarobei, upon their request, performed the Hyottoko dance. Delighted, the great tengu offered him a cup of sake and invited him to the moonlit banquet to be held again the next night. To ensure he would surely come, they took something precious from him—his lump. Secretly overjoyed, Tarobei told Jirobei about it the next morning. Jirobei, eager to go in his place, boasted that he would impress the tengu with his proud stick dance and claim their rewards. That night, the tengu grew angry at Jirobei's presumptuous dancing and, seeing him try to steal their treasures, became furious. They threw the lump they had been keeping at him. Now with lumps on both cheeks, Jirobei was sent flying by the tengu's fan.
