The story is set in a Scottish castle in the year 994, where a group of nocturnal gargoyles help humans defend the fortress. By day, they turn to stone; by night, they become living gargoyles, led by Goliath. However, due to a human conspiracy, the gargoyles are nearly wiped out. The few survivors manage to escape but fall into a deep slumber for a thousand years. When they finally awaken, they find the world has changed—they are now in the modern metropolis of Manhattan, New York, after the entire castle was relocated by the billionaire Xanatos, who hopes to use the gargoyles for his own purposes. But after being betrayed by humans and nearly driven to extinction, will these nocturnal gargoyles ever trust humans again?
