The film premiered on August 2, 1988, at SIGGRAPH in Atlanta, Georgia. On a bright and sunny day, warm sunlight spilled onto the wooden floor. A little red tin soldier arrived at this new home, curiously observing everything around him, unaware of the impending danger. Soon, a clumsy baby crawled in from the next room, roughly handling the toys nearby, which filled the tin soldier with panic. The soldier tried to sneak away, but the small drum he carried jingled loudly, naturally catching the baby's attention. Thus began a chase between two vastly mismatched opponents. The concept for this film originated from Pixar's creators imagining their babbling nephew. It won the 1989 Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film, the 2003 National Film Registry Award, the 1989 World Animation Celebration (WAC) Award, first prize at the 3rd Los Angeles International Animation Festival, and the Blue Ribbon Award from the American Film Institute.
