This hybrid piece is a collage created by assembling both analog and digital materials. Multiple layers of 8mm film merge to form a camera-less self-portrait of the filmmaker. The first layer consists of 8mm orphan film (found footage) from the 1970s, depicting a woman dancing. The second layer is an 8mm found footage film that was buried in soil for several months. During its interment, the film emulsion was consumed by bacteria in the earth, along with bacteria from yeast and sugar—a technique originally employed by Germany's Schmelzdahin group. After weeks underground, the film is excavated, rinsed, and scanned using a 4K digital scanner. The third layer is an 8mm home movie that was first decayed in soil using the aforementioned method, then hand-painted with ink.
