Released as a theatrical feature on March 19, 1983, "Space Battleship Yamato: The Final Chapter" was created as a literal "final chapter" and a milestone for the "Space Battleship Yamato" series. In reality, production did not proceed as scheduled and continued even after its initial release. On November 5 of the same year, a reconfigured version titled "Space Battleship Yamato: The Final Chapter 70mm Edition" was released. This version included newly shot footage, was remastered from mono to 6-channel surround sound, and utilized 70mm film. (In contrast, the initial release version is referred to as the "35mm Edition.") Furthermore, the version currently available on home video is this latter 70mm Edition. With this work, the "Space Battleship Yamato" series came to a temporary conclusion. Prior to the film's release, a four-hour radio program titled "All Night Nippon Special: Documentary Space Battleship Yamato," which included a newly recorded drama for this film, was broadcast on January 16, 1983. Later, a shortened and edited version titled "Space Battleship Yamato: The Final Chapter Special Edition" was screened starting August 10, 1985, as a double feature with "Odin: Photon Sailer Starlight."
