Best Romance Anime of All Time
Most romance anime lists are padded with mid shows. This one isn't. Every entry here earned its spot by doing something that other romance anime don't — or by doing the standard formula so well it doesn't matter.
Tier 1 — Masterclass
1. Your Lie in April
Score: 8.67 · Drama · Music · Romance · 22 Episodes
A piano prodigy who can no longer hear his own playing meets a violinist who plays like she's running out of time. Because she is.
You know where this is going from episode 1. It doesn't matter. The execution is so precise that the ending hits like a truck anyway. The classical music performances are genuinely beautiful.
2. Clannad: After Story
Score: 9.02 · Drama · Romance · Slice of Life · 24 Episodes
The first season of Clannad is a decent high school romance. After Story is what happens after — jobs, marriage, parenthood, loss. It goes places that romance anime almost never go.
Episodes 16-18 are among the most devastating in all of anime. Not recommended unless you've watched Season 1 first.
3. Toradora!
Score: 8.07 · Comedy · Romance · Slice of Life · 25 Episodes
The "tiger and dragon" rom-com that every other school romance gets compared to. Taiga is tiny and violent. Ryuuji looks scary but is actually a softie. They agree to help each other confess to the other's best friend.
The Christmas Eve episode is the romance anime moment. If you haven't seen it, you're missing a foundational text of the genre.
Tier 2 — Excellent
4. Kaguya-sama: Love Is War
Score: 8.89 · Comedy · Romance · Psychological
Two geniuses are in love. Neither will confess first. Every episode is a battle of wits to make the other one crack. The comedy is razor-sharp, and when the show finally drops the comedy mask, the emotional payoffs are earned.
5. Horimiya
Score: 8.15 · Romance · Slice of Life · 13 Episodes
A popular girl and a quiet loner discover each other's hidden lives. No miscommunication drama, no love triangles, no interrupting confessions. They just... get together. And it's wonderful.
Refreshingly normal. The pacing is fast — they're a couple by episode 4.
6. Weathering with You
Score: 7.95 · Romance · Fantasy · Movie
From the director of Your Name. A runaway boy meets a girl who can control the weather. The animation is stunning. The story is simpler than Your Name but hits different emotional notes.
Tier 3 — Hidden Gems You Missed
7. Bloom Into You
Score: 7.87 · Romance · Drama · 13 Episodes
A girl who has never felt romantic love agrees to date the student council president — who has never shown vulnerability to anyone. The most realistic depiction of figuring out attraction in anime. Quiet, intimate, and genuinely well-written.
8. Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku
Score: 7.94 · Comedy · Romance · Slice of Life
Two adult otaku start dating because it's convenient. The show is about navigating a relationship when both of you are massive nerds who'd rather be gaming. Relatable in a way that most romance anime isn't.
9. Josee, the Tiger and the Fish
Score: 8.09 · Romance · Drama · Movie
A college student takes a part-time job caring for a sharp-tongued wheelchair-bound girl who paints and reads about the ocean she's never seen. The disability representation is handled with care, and the romance develops naturally.
10. My Love Story!!
Score: 7.89 · Comedy · Romance
Takeo is a giant, muscular high school boy who keeps scaring away the girls he likes. Then he saves a girl from a groper on a train, and she falls for him — not his handsome best friend. The result is the most wholesome romance anime ever made.
