"Super Mario Bros Z" is a British fan-made Flash animation series created by Mark Haynes. It is a crossover of the "Super Mario" and "Sonic the Hedgehog" series, while also incorporating elements from the "Dragon Ball Z" series. The story follows Mario teaming up with Sonic the Hedgehog to stop Turbo Sonic from collecting the seven Chaos Emeralds and destroying the world.
The series began airing on April 22, 2006, and was ultimately canceled on March 30, 2012. It consists of 8 episodes, with the ninth episode released in an incomplete state alongside the announcement of the series' cancellation. The series was later rebooted, with the first episode released on January 8, 2016. On March 7, 2020, the original 2006 series finally received a 4K remaster with Dolby audio support. However, the original version's aspect ratio remained unchanged.
"Super Mario Bros Z" received generally positive reviews, with its fast-paced action sequences being particularly praised. The series holds significant influence within the pixel animation community, with many creators citing the series and Haynes as an influence on their work. Newgrounds founder Tom Fulp also praised the series highly, even raising the website's upload limit to allow the eighth episode to be uploaded to the site.
