This is a story as ancient as time itself. Long, long ago, when the universe was still young, spirits and creatures lived under the same sky. There was only one world then, a kingdom ruled in harmony by nature. Until evil entered this world, seeping into the hearts of spirits and creatures. From then on, the world splintered, and the kingdom divided into two factions: one belonging to those who loved peace, and the other to those who sought to profit from others, thriving on the suffering of their fellow beings. To protect all that was good in the world, the Castle of Kandrakar was built at the heart of the universe. There, the most powerful spirits and creatures kept constant vigil, led by Oracle, upon whose wisdom the people relied. In those days, Kandrakar was the one sanctuary that evil could not touch. And the Heart of Kandrakar was a powerful talisman, capable of gathering all elements into a pure and mighty energy. But once again, the Veil that protects Kandrakar is in peril, and new Guardians must be found. Amidst this turmoil and chaos, Kandrakar finds its Guardians on Earth. They are: Will (the bearer of the Heart of Kandrakar), Irma (who commands the power of water), Taranee (who wields the power of fire), Cornelia (who holds all the strength of the earth), and Hay Lin (who possesses the lightness and freedom of air). Will is the leader of the group. They are the W.I.T.C.H. quintet—the young Guardians of Kandrakar. The name "witch" carries the meaning of sorceress and is also an acronym formed from their names. The name for their magical alliance was given by Hay Lin.
