When the first ray of sunlight shines into the farm, an impassioned melody echoes through every corner. The great battle between cats and mice is about to erupt, and mice are enlisting in droves. Mickey is among the recruits. He undergoes a rough and rigorous physical examination, barely passes, and then dons his uniform, shoulders his rifle, and joins the training. Accompanied by a powerful march, the mouse soldiers are in high spirits. Soon, Pete leads the black cat troops to invade the farm, and a fierce battle becomes inevitable...
This film is the first animated work in which Mickey appears as a soldier. The scene of the rough physical examination would later be frequently recreated in Disney's future works. The image of the black cat troops reflects the German soldiers during World War I (which also led to the film being banned in Germany during the 1920s and 1930s). Additionally, the two songs "Dixie" and "Battle Cry of Freedom" were both popular tunes from the American Civil War.
