Four teenagers living in the Paris region discover an abandoned factory housing a quantum computer. Jérémie, who found it first, activates it and inadvertently awakens a dangerous program called XANA: a multi-agent program, originally created by Franz Hopper to counter a military project: Project Carthage. XANA, having since gained independence, now seeks to take control of the world.
To achieve this, it infects memory towers, which serve as its interface with the real world, within the territories of Lyoko. Aelita, a young virtual humanoid creature and the daughter of Franz Hopper, is XANA's only enemy on Lyoko, but she can rely on the help of four friends: Yumi, Ulrich, Odd, and Jérémie. They lead a double life in utmost secrecy: ordinary middle school students most of the time, they become saviors of the world whenever XANA launches an attack. They must keep their secret because if the authorities were to learn of the threat posed by XANA, they would shut down the supercomputer. This would lead to the destruction of Lyoko, and Aelita would disappear forever.
The four heroes have found a passage to this virtual universe. In addition to the supercomputer, the abandoned factory also houses three scanners that allow them to transfer to Lyoko. While Jérémie takes command to manage technical support, Odd, Yumi, and Ulrich travel to Lyoko. There, they battle XANA's virtual monsters to protect Aelita and help her deactivate the towers to stop the attacks using the "Lyoko" code.
