The prosperous Kingdom of Pars, with the continental highway linking East and West running through its lands, enjoyed flourishing culture and economy. Its royal capital, Ecbatana, rivaled the prosperity of the capital of the eastern "Silk Kingdom." However, in the year 320 of the Pars calendar, Pars was invaded by the western barbarians, the Lusitanians. Though victory should have been easily within reach, due to the betrayal of one of its ten-thousand-strong cavalry commanders, Pars suffered a devastating defeat at the Battle of the Plains of Atropatene. The continental powerhouse was brought to the brink of ruin in a single day. The defeated King Andragoras III of Pars was captured during his escape by a knight wearing a silver mask. Meanwhile, Crown Prince Arslan, on his first campaign, narrowly escaped the chaotic battlefield with the aid of his loyal retainer, Daryun. He eventually made his way to Mount Bashur in search of Narsus, who had fallen out of the king's favor.
