"Robotech II: The Sentinels" is an American sci-fi animated film produced by Harmony Gold USA, Matchbox International, and Tatsunoko, directed by Carl Macek, and featuring voice performances by Greg Finley, Tony Oliver, Richard Epcar, Steve Kramer, Cam Clarke, among others. It was released in the United States in 1988. As a sequel to the "Robotech" series, the project was originally planned for 65 episodes but was halted due to toy manufacturer MATCHBOX withdrawing funding and the appreciation of the Japanese yen. Ultimately, it was released as a 75-minute OVA, edited from the first three episodes of the aborted television sequel series.
The story is set in 2020 after the completion of the Robotech Expeditionary Force's flagship, the SDF-3. It revolves around the internal conflicts between the Expeditionary Force led by Rick Carter and the Southern Cross Army commanded by Eli Leonard. Several years after the destruction of the Super Dimension Fortresses SDF-1 and SDF-2, General Rick Carter and Admiral Lisa Hayes prepare for their wedding and plan a crucial interstellar expedition to Tirol, the homeworld of the Robotech Masters, using the newly constructed SDF-3. The main plot includes key events such as Rick and Lisa's wedding and the invasion of Tirol by the Invid Regent, showcasing the political and military conflicts during the Expeditionary Force's preparations for "Operation Pioneer." Completed segments depict scenes like the fall of Tirol, and subsequent derivative works include the official novel and comic series published in 1988.
