Yang Guo learns that his father's killers are none other than Guo Jing and his wife, yet Guo Jing's character and actions make Yang Guo reluctant to take revenge. Xiaolongnü is devastated to discover that the one who took her virginity that night was actually the Quanzhen Sect Taoist Yin Zhiping, not Yang Guo, and decides to return to the ancient tomb to live alone. Meanwhile, Guo Jing's daughter, Guo Fu, severs Yang Guo's right arm. In a daze, Yang Guo wanders to the Divine Eagle Valley, where the Divine Eagle tends to his wounds and even teaches him martial arts. Yang Guo returns to the ancient tomb to find Xiaolongnü, only to witness her being severely injured by the Mongolian Golden Wheel Monk while passing through the Quanzhen Sect. After numerous hardships, Yang Guo and Xiaolongnü finally marry, but tragically, Xiaolongnü is left with little time to live...
Knowing her injuries are fatal and fearing Yang Guo would die alongside her in grief, Xiaolongnü leaves a note at the foot of a cliff: "Meet again in sixteen years." She then bravely leaps into the bottomless abyss! When Yang Guo awakens to find Xiaolongnü gone, he is left bewildered. To console him, Huang Rong claims that Xiaolongnü was taken away by a reclusive master and will return to him in sixteen years. Skeptical yet hopeful, Yang Guo decides to wait for Xiaolongnü for sixteen years.
