The protagonist of the story, Fujiwara Takumi, is an ordinary high school boy with unparalleled racing talent. Since his first year of middle school, he has driven his AE86 at breakneck speeds on Mount Akina every morning, honing his dazzling (note: dazzling) driving skills. It must be noted that his exceptional driving ability stems from his daily pre-dawn task of delivering tofu made by his father to a restaurant at the summit of Mount Akina. Regardless of wind, rain, or snow, over five years, his driving skills advanced by leaps and bounds. The black-and-white AE86 is a Japanese "national treasure" classic sports car with only 130 horsepower. Yet, relying on Fujiwara Takumi's extraordinary skill and talent, he successively defeats Takahashi Keisuke, another prodigy from the Red Suns racing team; Nakazato Takeshi, who drives the fearsome black R32; and, using a "death grip race" (where his right hand is taped to the steering wheel, preventing it from turning to its usual maximum), he defeats the second-in-command of the NightKids. Furthermore, on the mountain roads of Akina, he defeats the top driver of Red Suns, Takahashi Ryosuke, who drives the prestigious FC3S. Of course, Takumi's growth doesn't stop there. "His technique is like art." What we are most familiar with is the AE86's dazzling drift (an automotive term referring to the state where the car slides sideways during a high-speed turn) and its gutter-running technique. The legend of the fastest downhill AE86 on Mount Akina officially begins.
