This art film is a paper-cut animation adapted from the opera of the same name, with character designs by Ke Ming and background designs by Liu Feng.
Zhang Fei receives a military order and initially thinks he will be sent to the front lines to fight. To his surprise, he is appointed as a low-ranking county magistrate. The hot-tempered Zhang Fei considers refusing the order, but his attendant reminds him that this is likely a test devised by the military strategist Zhuge Liang. Thus, he takes up his post and handles his first case. While stealing watermelons from Mr. Yao's melon field, the local constable witnesses Mr. Yao harassing a young woman holding an infant. He intends to intervene, but after Mr. Yao threatens and bribes him, he agrees to give false testimony to help Mr. Yao falsely accuse the woman of stealing melons. Before Zhang Fei, Mr. Yao and the woman each present their own version of events, leaving Zhang Fei momentarily at a loss. Eventually, he recalls Zhuge Liang's advice and devises a clever plan.
