Thanks to the popularity of the TV anime's reruns and riding the anime boom that began with "Space Battleship Yamato," the theatrical anime version was released on July 15, 1978. The footage was a re-edit of the TV version, but visually, the Scanimate technique used in "Tekkaman: The Space Knight" and "Time Bokan" was employed for newly shot scenes. In terms of audio, it boasted "Super Stereophonic Phoenix Sound 4ch," with new music composed by Kōichi Sugiyama and performed by the NHK Symphony Orchestra (see "Symphonic Suite: Science Ninja Team Gatchaman"). It became a topic of conversation as it was the first time the NHK Symphony Orchestra had performed a film soundtrack. Due to commercial requirements, Kihachi Okamoto was credited as the nominal supervisor. Toriumi, a long-time fan of Okamoto, reportedly agreed to this condition out of joy at the prospect of meeting him.
