The story follows Hayate Ayasaki, a first-year public high school student whose lazy and irresponsible parents force him to work part-time every day to support the family. On Christmas Eve, Hayate returns home to find a note from his parents—they have fled after racking up a debt of 150 million yen. To repay the debt, they even attempted to sell Hayate’s organs. With loan sharks on his tail and nowhere to turn, Hayate plans to kidnap a girl in a nearby park to demand a ransom. However, through a series of mishaps and misunderstandings, Hayate ends up saving the girl instead. Little does he know, the girl is Nagi Sanzenin, the heiress of the wealthy Sanzenin conglomerate. To repay him for saving her life, she hires Hayate as her butler and pays off his debt. But the kind-hearted Hayate insists on repaying the money himself, and thus begins his life as a butler…
