Disney's 25th classic animated film. It is also the most unconventional work among Disney's classic animations. The story follows a young boy named Taran, who fights against the demon king The Horned King to protect the peace of his homeland and prevent him from using the magic of the Black Cauldron to harm the world. Adapted from Lloyd Alexander's novel "The Chronicles of Prydain."
The plot revolves around a young boy named Taran, who battles the demon king The Horned King to safeguard the peace of his homeland and stop him from exploiting the power of the Black Cauldron to bring harm to the world. This film is the first to be entirely completed by the second generation of Disney animators, leaning more toward darker themes. It features some bloody scenes rarely seen in Disney animations, making it stylistically distinct from previous Disney works. As a result, the film was rated PG upon its release in the United States, which, given the climate of American film censorship at the time, marked it as significantly different from other Disney movies suitable for family viewing. This film also represents Disney's first use of computer assistance to shoot certain special effects, though only for a few brief scenes. It wasn't until the following year's "The Great Mouse Detective" that Disney first utilized computers to create an entire independent scene. This film stands as the most unconventional work in Disney's classic animation library, as it deviates from the traditional family-friendly approach. Consequently, Disney hesitated for a long time over whether to release it on home video, compounded by copyright disputes and other issues... However, after internal discussions, the film finally saw its first VHS release in the UK at the end of 1997. However, attentive fans quickly noticed that several scenes had been cut! This led to protests directed at Disney... As for the United States, the film was first released on VHS in 1998, in its original complete version.
