In the courtyard of a house, atop a large tree, Mother Woodpecker sits perched on a branch knitting a sweater. She glances at her watch and notices it’s already noon. Carefully wrapping the egg beneath her, she puts up a sign that reads "Out for Lunch" and leisurely flies away. But no sooner has she left than the woodpecker egg begins to stir. It rolls out of the nest, slides all the way down the tree, slips through the floorboards of the house, and ends up right under the bottom of a little mouse named Jerry. Startled awake by the egg, Jerry watches as the shell cracks open, and an adorable baby woodpecker emerges, mistaking Jerry for its mother and showering him with affection. To Jerry’s dismay, the little woodpecker proceeds to peck every piece of wooden furniture in his home into splinters. Unable to bear it any longer, Jerry drives the little one outside.
