Gun was tasked by Yao to control the floods, but his stubborn adherence to the "blocking" method led to the failure of his dam-building efforts, resulting in his exile by Shun to Mount Yu for reflection. Yu, inheriting his father's ambition, gained Shun's support to manage the waters through the "diversion" method. He resolved conflicts over water resources, excavated the Dragon Gate to channel floods into the East Sea, and succeeded after thirteen years of effort. Yu accepted the abdication and became the common ruler, passing on the mission of flood control and protecting the people. His spirit returned to the Abyss of Yu to reconcile with his father, and his legacy endured forever.
